NEOS – International student and teacher workshop in Otzenhausen
19 - 21 October 2005

A group formed by four students and four teachers of Liceo Majorana participated in the International student and teacher workshop in Otzenhausen, 19 - 21 October 2005, as an activity of NEOS, the Europe Oriented schools network.
Our students presented in Otzenhausen the work they had been preparing with their mates in Orvieto since May 2005. During the workshop they have been working together with the students from the other countries to develop original material that will now be presented back in the Liceo.

One group, composed of students from classes 4ST1 and 4ST2, sent to Otzenhausen a presentation of the Scientific-Technological Course, which contained also original software, as an example of the use of IT in the didactic activity.

The other group, composed of classes 4S2 and 4L, had prepared for Otzenhausen an hystorical path about the developement of Europe, up to a deep analysis of the actual European Constitution proposal, particularly regarding youth problems

During the workshop the 64 students, coming from Italy, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Finland, were working in the following groups:

Group 1 To think European – European Consciousness

Group 2 New Technologies – How to use technologies for communication

Group 3 European Constitution – Common political values

Group 4 From contact to relationship – Development of friendships

In each group the students, guided by coordinating teachers, realized a final product, which came from a common reflection. Every group followed the same methodology: the students first presented and shared the works from their own schools, then started a debate which led to a reflection path.

At last they chose the final product apt to represent concretely the work they had done, and realized it. Each group realized a different kind of product using different techniques, and they presented their work in a final plenary meeting.

The EuropaSchule Koeln is working on the video material they have been collecting during the workshop, which will be soon released. What follows were the guidelines for the groups during their work.

Group 1. To think European

As already worked out and presented in Ibi, this issue can be dealt with very well in building a “European House” with different rooms, strong walls, an open entrance door etc. This is the way we should go on and keep also in mind the original question of how an enduring European consciousness can arise without loss or denial of the own national and cultural identity. The members of this group should prepare different items to build the house.

Group 2. New technologies

According to the suggestions which were written down in Ibi, this group will prepare a powerpoint like presentation, a web-site, a database, a teaching unit for primary schools or something similar.

Group 3. European constitution

We state that a European constitution (accepted or not accepted) is one event at the end of a long historical line of development of democracy. At last, there wouldn’t be any European constitution without Rousseau, without the Enlightenment, without the French revolution, without marxism, and not even without Plato and Aristoteles. To get closer to this long historical process ( especially for young people) we’ve got the idea to make a European travel through time. This means that the members of this group should prepare important historical points on the way to European democracy.

Group 4. From contact to relationship

Try to imagine the development from first contact to a deep friendship as a “European Menu” from the starters until the desert. There can be a “contact soup”, “a prejudice salad” “pasta with conflict sauce” , “friendship-cakes”, there is no limit for everyone’s imagination and creativity. At last this could be presented as a real international menu (the means and rooms for this are given in Otzenhasuen) or maybe only as a menu card – this depends on the participants.
