An education to global and sustainable future

NEOS together with schools in the south of the world for a common future

Sustainability of economical and social development of the entire planet is a basilar matter for the future of the mankind and it is particularly important for students. The problems connected with the exploitation of natural resources, with the spreading of economical and technological development and its influence on the environment, will involve the whole world population more and more. Only the awareness of a unique destiny for the mankind and of a common citizenship could help keeping the respect among different cultures, the peaceful share of the natural resources of the planet and the research of solutions for a sustainable social development.

School is one of the best places where it is possible to project a planetary sustainable future.

Liceo “E. Majorana” of Orvieto with ENEA, the Italian Agency for New Technologies Energy and Environment, proposes to the NEOS network the study and realization of an international project, dealing with cooperation and development of schools in the south of the world.

The aim of the Project is to spread renewable technologies to sustain social functions in developing countries, by means of the electrification of a school with solar cells and connection to the internet.

The schools’ Actions we are proposing for the  2004/2005 school year:

-      Activation of laboratories in the participant schools regarding the knowledge necessary for the future

-     Contacts with schools in the south of the world which have already been involved in similar projects, to gather information on past experiences

-      Choice and contact with the “target school” in order to get acquaintance and to gather  information needed to the project

-      Technological and market research, logistic and economical planning

-      Organization of a common event at each participant school, with the goal of gathering funds to finance the project. The event will take place in all countries during the spring of 2005, in different ways (e.g. concerts, performances, exhibitions) but using a common slogan

-      All the described actions will be supported by the IT multilanguages platform www.argiso.it which is hosted by the Regional Council of Umbria and administrated by Liceo Majorana; it will be properly modified to suit the project.  The platform gives the opportunity to publish in a quick and autonomous way articles divided in categories, and to use a forum which accepts attachments. This will facilitate the collaboration and the exchange of the work in progress among all the schools.
